Bass-baritone Orival Bento Gonçalves has enjoyed much success and gained recognition for his sensitive artistry and winning execution on the concert and opera stages around the world. His musical accomplishments range from early music to modern and his operatic engagements include Colline in La Bohème, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Uberto in La serva padrona, Claudius in Agrippina, Banco in Macbeth, Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Sagristano in Tosca, Zuniga in Carmen, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Swallow in Peter Grimes, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Publius in La clemenza di Tito, Creon in Oedipus Rex among others.


In addition to recitals in South America, the United States, Canada and Europe, on the concert stage he has also performed the solo parts in such masterpieces as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, and Stravinsky’s Les Noces to name a few.


Orival’s musical studies started as a guitarist at the age of eight moving to the piano at thirteen and after that to voice. He received a Doctor’s degree in Vocal Performance from State University of New York at Stony Brook. His earlier studies in voice were in Brazil, then in the United States at the University of Houston and Rice University .


A recipient of various awards, in 2001 Orival won 1st prize in the prestigious Bidú Sayão International Vocal Competition.
